TL;DR: 5G is officially mainstream in 2025. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade, now’s the time. Here’s what you need to know.
🎯 The Sweet Spot: X62/X65 Modems
The cellular modem landscape has finally stabilized around Qualcomm’s X62 and X65 chipsets – these are the “Phase 2” 5G modems that actually deliver on the promises we’ve been hearing about for years.
X62 (Budget-Friendly): Dual-carrier aggregation, solid performance, lower cost
X65 (Premium): Triple-carrier aggregation, higher speeds, better future-proofingThe good news? X65 routers are FINALLY starting to hit the market in 2025. MOFI and Peplink have the first models available, with more manufacturers expected this year.
📶 Carrier Battle Update
The 5G landscape has some clear winners and interesting developments:
🏆 T-Mobile: Still the undisputed leader. Their Ultra Capacity network covers 300M+ people and they’re the only carrier with widespread 5G Standalone deployment.
🚀 Verizon: Aggressively catching up with C-band expansion. Their Ultra Wideband network now covers 280M people and performance is getting competitive.
📈 AT&T: Finally getting serious about 5G with their own C-band rollout. Still behind but improving rapidly.
🛰️ Game Changer: Satellite Integration
This might be the biggest development since our last update – cellular and satellite networks are merging:
- Starlink Direct-to-Cell with T-Mobile is rolling out in 2025
- Apple and Google adding satellite messaging to phones
- Dead zones becoming a thing of the past
⚠️ What’s Fading: mmWave
Remember all the hype about mmWave 5G and gigabit speeds? Yeah, that’s mostly dead. Even Apple dropped mmWave from newer devices. Turns out physics wins – the range is just too short and building penetration too poor for practical deployment.
💡 2025 Buying Recommendations
If you’re buying new equipment:
- Target X62/X65 modems (avoid older X55 generation)
- T-Mobile offers the best overall 5G experience
- Consider waiting for X65 routers if you want maximum future-proofing
- X55 devices work but are showing their age, especially on AT&T
If you have older gear:
- X55 users should consider upgrading, especially AT&T customers
- Anything older than X55 is definitely obsolete
- Good LTE equipment still works great in many areas
🔮 Looking Ahead
6G development is officially starting (targeting ~2030), but 5G Advanced is rolling out now with AI integration and enhanced performance. X72/X75 modems will probably hit routers in 2026.
The bottom line: 2025 is the year 5G finally became essential rather than experimental.
Discussion Questions:
- What’s your current setup and are you planning to upgrade?
- How has 5G performance been in your area?
- Anyone tried the new X65 routers yet?
- Which carrier gives you the best performance for mobile internet?
- Thoughts on the Starlink Direct-to-Cell partnership with T-Mobile?
